Monday is our second anniversary. I can't believe it's already been two years (and yet it seems like a lot longer than that... in a really GOOD way).
We are planning to return to where we spent our honeymoon in February (when I have a long weekend). In the meantime, we still wanted to celebrate.
After lots of talking and thinking and internet research, we have decided on a fun night tonight here in town (dinner and a movie) and going away for a night tomorrow. At first we were looking at Tampa, but then I found some options in Orlando. As touristy as it is, that is in our favor as far as hotel rates. I thought about priceline-ing it, but we wanted to pick which hotel we stay in. We settled on the Buena Vista Palace Resort and Spa. It was just renovated and has REALLY HIGH ratings on every site we checked. Here's a picture of one of the newly decorated rooms...
Down pillows and duvet, flat screen tv (you know Matt likes the sound of that), etc. It is right by Downtown Disney, so we'll be able to see the Downtown Disney fireworks tomorrow night (!!) and maybe Epcot's fireworks, too!! The grounds look beautiful, and we are really excited. :) Sammy is all taken care of and accounted for, too. It should be great!
We will be sure to take lots of pictures. Universal Studios has offered Florida teachers a free pass through the end of the year, so we might go to Universal while we're down there.
We hope you have a great weekend, and we'll be sure to update upon our return! :)

Becca

Still Here
Sorry it's been so long since an update... almost 10 days! Gasp!
We are doing fine, though this continues to be a super busy month. Last weekend Matt went up to Michigan for some friends' wedding. My mom came down to spend the weekend with me, which was delightful and such a relief. For whatever reason, being sick with the coughing crud sapped all my energy. I tried doing laundry, but the dirty clothes mounted and then the CLEAN clothes mounted into an ironing pile that was quite overwhelming. Mom was such a blessing and got us all caught up. She also fixed the chair pockets for my classroom so they fit the chairs perfectly. The kids are so excited about them! :) And they seem to be really helping cut down on the "rummaging through your desk" to find something problem.
I recently submitted an order to the Scholastic book orders for the second time. I got to pick out several selections for my class library as well as some teacher resource books. I even get class sets of 2 different books! I like Scholastic. :)
We ordered a new gate to keep Sammy in the kitchen. The one we had wasn't long enough to mount, and she managed to nudge it (she mastered her technique) and escape frequently. Then, when we finally found something heavy enough to hold it, she started CLIMBING it! We now have (it just arrived today) a gate with vertical bars (the other had "X" shaped crossings), which should help with the climbing issue. She's still pretty happy as a lark and fun to be around. :)
This weekend is our one year anniversary, which is pretty amazing! I reminded Matt that on Wednesday the week of the wedding (the equivalent of today), he was flying into Knoxville for the wedding and we were being serenaded at the airport by sweet family and friends. It's incredible how quickly this year has flown by!
I guess that's about all for now. Thanks again, Mom, for all the help around the house and the yummy meals. We are still enjoying them. :) We miss you, but we can't wait to see you at E's wedding!
Love,
Becca

Samantha's First Bath
We decided to give Sammy her first bath today after her walk. It is hot here in Gainesville, and she was beginning to smell a tiny bit sweaty (I can't imagine a long-haired dog like Ellie in the heat here!). Tyson, one of Matt's best men, is also visiting for the weekend. We wanted her looking her best when he arrives tomorrow (we'll see if I can convince Matt to let me put a bow on her). :)
She didn't cry, although the bath was clearly not HER idea. :) Here's a series of shots from her first bath. :)

getting dried offWe are very glad tomorrow is Friday. The first week of school is exhausting! My feet are BARKING too (although, our dog isn't--yea, so far she's not barky!). I think a good soak is in order very soon! We also celebrated our 10 month "anni"versary on the 15th. It's pretty hard to believe we had only 2 months until the wedding this time last year! We'd been apart for a month and Matt was getting settled here in Gainesville. It's weird that it's only 2 months until a year will have passed--it seems like it just happened but also that it was ages ago. We've moved twice since then, I got a job, I've now taught 2 of my very own classes, we adopted a dog, and a myriad of other things. :) What a difference a year makes!
We love you and we hope your weeks end well (and that your weekends begin well!)! :)

9 Months
We celebrated our 9 month "anni"versary a little bit late, since we were at the beach on the 15th (and it was Matt's only night at the beach). This weekend we enjoyed a yummy dinner out (complete with thunder storm that almost knocked out the power at the restaurant) and some relaxing movies at home. Here's a picture of us when we returned home after dinner. :)

Happy Belated 6 Months to Us!
Last night we attended the Nickel Creek concert as a 6 month "ann"iversary gift to ourselves. Matt loves music and always has--and I do too-- (he played marching French horn in the Pride of the Southland UT marching band), and we both like Nickel Creek. One of his coworkers had CLOSE tickets he couldn't use, so Matt snagged them up. :)We started the evening off with dinner at Moe's. It was really crowded, because UF is having their reading days/beginning of finals this week. There were lots of college students studying at the plaza where Moe's is (there's also a Coldstone Creamery, Panera, and Starbucks in the plaza). A booth did open up right when we got our food, so we got to sit down and relax while we enjoyed our dinner. :)
Then we headed to the Phillips center on campus for the concert. It was beautiful!! We were less than ten rows back and off center. It was great--we could see the whole stage at once, and a tiny bit of backstage action in the wings from our seats. :) Then opening act, the Ditty Bops, was really fun. And Nickel Creek was awesome! I have to say, I was totally impressed that the fiddle player did the WHOLE concert in pretty high heels. It was cute to see her take them off for the encore though. :) This is the same tour Brad and Joy saw, so we figured out quickly that the play list was going to be very close/identical to the cd we have of the Knoxville concert. That was fun, because we could anticipate some of our favorites. They still did the cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic," which was still really funny and well-received. They introduced it by saying they were honoring an artist whose formative artistic years were spent right in Florida (i.e. The Mickey Mouse Club). We are also super-impressed with the base player they had with him. He was amazing, and he tap danced too!
We really enjoyed our special night out. It's the first "function" of this kind we've managed to attend since the wedding. We can't wait to see what UF brings to town next!
p.s. Our mortgage is now official! Now we're just trying to get the inspector lined up. The two we've tried so far are booked up past the date we need it. We'd appreciate your prayers on a good and speedy inspector. :)
**EDIT** We have an inspector lined up, now we just need to confirm the seller will be able to let us in the house for it at that time. :)

St. Augustine: The Full Story
So, yesterday we spent a delightful time at St. Augustine. Matt had been rather under the weather during the week. His daily schedule included staying in bed until the last possible minute, pushing himself throug the work day, falling asleep on the bed until dinner was ready, eating, and then dozing back off, all the while running a low grade fever and all the symtoms that accompany that--aches, chills, etc. As such, he was planning a way for some "us" time to make up for the week (not that I blame him by any means for being sick!).
We actually had a relaxing, lazy morning with yummy pancakes and sausage. Matt packed us a picnic, loaded the car, and off we went! I asked Matt if St. Augustine was on the coast, and he thought it was inland. I looked on the map he printed, and there it was on the coast! BEAAAAAACH!!!! :) We drove a little bit around the town, but followed the signs to the beach first and foremost. We had a relaxing time strolling through the sand. The only "snag" was the chilly, windy weather! We surprised ourselves by thinking, "Why is it so cold??" Remember, the highs have been around 78 in Gainesville. We suddenly remembered that it's MARCH! Of course it's cold! It was really pretty though, and we picked up a couple sea shells to bring home. There weren't many on the Gulf during our honeymoon, so it was fun to get a few. :)
After eating our picnic lunch at the beach, we loaded back up to explore St. Augustine. Unfortunately, there must have been some type of accident on the bridge that connects the beaches to the city, because it was shut down by emergency vehicles after we waited in traffic for 10-15 minutes. We turned around, used one of my many trusty Florida maps, and found an alternate way home. That meant we didn't get to explore the city itself. It has a wall from the original fort and some really cool art districts with cobble stone streets and everything. I was excited to look through the artisan shops and take pictures in the historic district. But, since we didn't get to go, we now have another day trip to look forward to. It was just amazing to be at the beach in less than 2 hours! WOW! Who'd have thought I'd ever live that close to the beach?!?? :)
Please come visit us, and we will be more than happy to show you around our newest discovery--St. Augustine!
Here are a few more pictures for your viewing enjoyment. :)

St. Augustine Preview
We are back from our trip to St. Augustine, so I thought I'd post a few pictures as a preview. More to come tomorrow (as always, you can click on pictures to make them bigger).

We're Off to See the Wizard!
Well, not really the wonderful wizard of Oz. Matt surprised me this morning upon waking with a trip to St. Augustine for the day. So, after a relaxed breakfast, we are on the road! We'll be sure to take pictures and let you know all about it when we get back. :)
Love,

I'll Get You My Pretty....
...and your little teaching license, too!
That's what it feels like, at least! Today we had training for administering the FCAT in 2 weeks. There are so many rules and regulations. And after each one is the basic gyst that if you do not follow the prescribed procedures, your student(s)' test(s) will be invalidated and you can/will lose your teaching license. No pressure, brain's not swimming or anything.... I have two 1/2 inch thick manuals on administering the FCAT. I would post pictures of them, so you could see for yourselves the massive volume of rules and requirements, but that'd probably put my license in jeopardy, too. ;) Thankfully, they gave me one of our computer lab teachers as the proctor in my classroom. The other third grade teachers have pre-interns for proctors. And while a proctor is helpful no matter what, I'm thankful they recognize my total inexperience with this and gave me someone who's been around it before.
My students did a practice FCAT reading test today. I gave them one hour, and only one didn't finish (and had only 1 passage left). That was better than I thought they would do. I haven't graded it yet, but at least time-wise they were on par.
I'm being observed tomorrow (1:00 by my mentoring teacher) and Friday (11:00 by my assistant principal) and would very much appreciate your prayers. :) I know I always make it worse in my head, but the thought of them makes me feel sick. I'll be REJOICING LIKE CRAZY when they're over on Friday, and I have a 3 day weekend WITH my parents right in front of me! Whew! The day after tomorrow!
As a student, I never thought about Valentine's Day from the teachers' perspective. A bunch of hyper, uber-excited kids, hopped up on sugar. Hmmm, it makes for an interesting day! And Valentine's Day is an extra crazy party to have because of the Valentine passing out issues. If only I had known a parent was coming to help, I would have pulled my Valentine's books and had my kids listen to stories while I passed out the snacks and had kids put Valentine's in bags a few at a time. Then everything would have been ready when they returned to their seats to enjoy the festivities within the realms of moderate noise and excitement. Instead, it was mass chaos. Controlled chaos, but chaos nonetheless. Now I know. It will be different next year, I can say that for sure!
Matt has voted for taco pie tonight, so I should get the meat defrosted. Thanks for the recipe, Mom. I think I actually made it for Matt the summer we were dating--maybe I left my recipe in Knoxville and that's how you came across it? Or maybe I just made a similar one. He sounds excited though. :)
We had a good Valentine's Day. :) We got Rafferty's carry out, he had a cd of ocean sounds (we've been commenting on how much we miss the sound of the ocean--we left one of our balcony doors open every night on our honeymoon and fell asleep to the sound of the waves [and awakened to the beep beep and engine rumble of the beach patrol--and then gladly rolled over back to sleep]) playing upon my arrival home, a beautiful rose arrangement on the dining room table, and we just got each other silly little things. The best part, was we both got each other gum as one of the silly little presents! :) Great minds think alike, I say! :)
Tonight we're going to watch Sweet Home Alabama, because we always watch it at Valentine's (well, the two Valentine's we've been together), but that was pushed back because of Gilmore Girls last night.
We hope you have a good night! We are so thankful for the gift of you and especially for the LOVE of God Who provided Jesus Christ! :)
Blessings,
Becca

The Story of Us (LONG post ahead) :)
So, here we go...
Matt and I first met through our church's college group. I think I was maybe a sophomore and he was a senior (we're 2 years apart in school, 1.5 in age). I was really impressed with his friendliness and, upon hearing him pray, with his heart for God and desire for His will. The summer before my junior year, the college ministry was going to have a back to school cook out on a farm. The out-going interns asked another girl and me to help some guys plan in. No, Matt wasn't one of those guys. ;) BUT, he offered to help us set up the day of the party. He ended up riding with me to pick up the bbq and side items from Buddy's BBQ. On our way, it started raining. Buddy's is about 1 mile from my parents' house, so I told him (I was driving) that I wanted to stop by home and change clothes--it was going to get chilly and I wanted an extra layer. We did make the stop, and he visited with my mom at the kitchen table while I changed clothes.
I remember my mom was impressed by him as well. For awhile she would ask me, "So, did you talk to that Matt guy at all?" Unfortunately, the answer was usually no. There was ONE time after the Blink (our college mid-week praise and worship) when he talked to me exclusively after it was over. Even my friend Rachel (a bridesmaid :) ) noted his exclusive interest in conversing with me that week and was trying to find a way to arrange a time for us to hang out. At that point, I had seen him enough to know that he was really friendly. And while I would have loved for our talk to indicate romantic interest on his part, I was trying REALLY hard not to get my hopes up. And I'd seen that he was friendly in general and it probably meant nothing. That suspicion as confirmed the next week when he talked to some other girl. He wasn't, and isn't, flirty, he's just friendly and talkative.
I became busy with student teaching (I student taught a class of young toddlers for a semester at UT's child development lab) and he became busy with senior projects (as an engineering student, he finished college in 5 years, which is very common in UT's difficult engineering programs), so we didn't see each other much for about a year!
About 1.5 years later, I ran into Matt one Sunday morning at church. Brad & Joy were manning the information desk, and Matt stopped by looking for the Kairos class. That was our Sunday school class--couples and singles in their 20s (and now also, early 30s). I offered to show him where it was, since I was headed that way as well. Matt ended up sitting with Brad, Joy, and me, but that was all it really amounted to. I did invite him to a summer Bible/book study the college ministry had organized, and he came. The study was on John Piper's Desiring God. It was great! The book is really thought-provoking, and it was a blessing to fellowship with friends like Nancy and Elissa (remember the name Elissa!). It also gave me a chance to try to prove my domesticity. How? Well, I took a dessert to the study every week. There were several guys in the study, and while it was not my reason for attending, I didn't mind helping any of them (ahem, Matt) along in learning that I like to cook (and might be a good cook for them). ;)
Our favorite "summer wind" (the name of the study group) moment happened when Matt arrived one Sunday after the evening service. He came into the room, took a couple cookies I made and brought, commented on how good they were (yesssss!), and then announced that he couldn't stay because he had a big test to study for. What?!?!? He just came for my COOKIES! He didn't care about ME at all!!!
Our second favorite memory of summer wind is when I arrived and there was a seat open between Matt and Elissa. I saw that as a great opportunity to get to chat with Matt without being too conspicuous--it could look like I just wanted a seat next to my friend, Elissa. And seeing as how MOST men can be a little slow on subtle hints, I figured he wouldn't read anything into it unless he wanted to. I sweetly approached the couch and asked, "Is this seat taken?" I got my seat. :) And Matt picked up on it.
But the kicker!! He asked ELISSA out!! I started to pick up on a vibe that he was gravitating toward her and backed my heart up again. Nevermind. Not me. I didn't know until after we started dating that the vibe I picked up on was real, and they had gone out to coffee. In God's plans, nothing further progressed between them. Later, Matt went on a camping trip with his small group and asked them, "What do you think about dating a girl who's taller than you?" (I am an inch or two taller than Matt). "Do you like her?" they asked. "Well, yeah." "Then ask her out." Can you see the tide turning?
Somewhere in the mix, I must write about one other big event. The college ministry has a big lunch at the church once a month. Free food draws students from miles around! One particular lunch was in the late summer/early fall. Matt came and said hi, and we began talking. He was going on a business trip to Denver soon, and I lived in Denver for 3 years. That got us talking, and time flew! By the time we were done talking, we looked up, and EVERYONE else was gone! I mean, there had been at least 100 people seated and eating lunch, and we were the ONLY two left when we were done talking. And we hadn't even noticed! It was SUCH a movie moment! Actually, we THOUGHT we were the only ones left. It turns out my Bible study leader was in and out cleaning up. In the elevator on the way to Bible study that night, Paige asked me about him. I told her it was nothing and that he was just really nice. She wasn't convinced and said, "I just want you to know I dated plenty of guys when I was in college who were shorter than I." subtle. :)
Okay, so Matt was interested in the new members' class at church. Since Mom works at the church, I offered to email him the info about signing up. I tried emailing it, and he says he didn't get it. The next week, I asked him to email me back if he got my email, so I would know if something was wrong with my email (and I thought it was a sneaky way to get him to email me). He did email back a response. I read ALL my other email first and saved his for last. I still remember being on instant messenger with Erin, opening the email, and reading,
"Becca,
Got it.
Matt"
I was floored! That was ALL??? Thankfully, email went a little better after that. ;) I dropped a hint that my birthday was coming. He emailed back and suggested we do lunch. I had liked this guy for TWO years. I didn't want to be disappointed if things were a total flop, so I picked the day AFTER my birthday. That way, if it was horrible, I wouldn't be sad on my birthday. :) We met up on campus and walked to McAlister's for lunch. I decided it was really a date when he offered to pay (I had never "dated" anyone, and I had only been on a handful of "dates" that were never labeled as such by the guy. NO dating experience and ambiguous, undefined, kinda leading-on types of encounters were my only experience. You can bet my heart was walled in titanium by the time poor Matt came around! But it was all for my good! Our high school pastor used to say, "There is the intent of God behind the content of life."). We talked a ton, about all the places I'd lived, school, family, travels, etc. I thought we were getting along well, but I had no idea what he was thinking. I was afraid I'd lost him for sure when I couldn't remember which floor of the parking garage my car was on when he walked me to my car. His parting words were, "That was fun. We should do it again sometime." It seemed pretty vague to me, and I thought, "I will never see you again."
Next weekend, the phone rings. Matt calls and asks me to play cards. The weekend after that, I still haven't heard from him by Friday night. "Oh well." WAIT! The phone rings!! But all he does is chat. He never asks me to do anything. Huh? THEN, Saturday morning he called and asked if I would spend the day with him in Gatlinburg and go to the aquarium (I had mentioned I wanted to go sometime in passing, not like "we should go together"). I said yes, but realizing he was on a grad student's budget, I dressed kinda casual and thought I might be able to save him some money and just walk some mountain trails instead. He showed up, meeting my father for the first time, in shiny black dress shoes, dress slacks, and a button down. I felt like his kid sister. I think we both wanted to run and change clothes the instant we saw each other. The aquarium is about 45 minutes away, but the time passed really quickly. We had fun at the aquarium and enjoyed walking around. On our way back, he suggested dinner together once we were back in Knoxville. I think he offered Olive Garden, but I told him he didn't need to spend that much. He picked Chili's instead, and we had spent the whole day together by the time we were finished.
He was preparing to go home to Rock Hill the next weekend for Thanksgiving. It was killing me that nothing was "defined." I had been burned by that mistake in the past, and I was scared. I wanted to do SOMETHING not too forward to show him I was interested if he was. I made a batch of sugar cookies and used Thanksgiving themed cookie cutters, then decorated them with frosting. While he was busy at the lab, I left them on his front porch, along with a note that I was praying for his studies to be fruitful and that he would have favor as he approaches exams, etc. Apparently that note (and the cookies... the way to a man's heart IS through his stomach) sealed the deal. He says he'd never felt so supported and cared for, especially by someone his own age. He says he praised God for sending him the helpmate he longer and prayed for, and that I was right there (literally, he lived about 2 minutes away) ready for the pursuing and sweetly showing I would welcome that.
He returned from a "miserable" Thanksgiving, having moped and told all his family about the girl back in Knoxville. The first opportunity he had upon returning, he asked me to go for a walk. On that walk (at 10:00 Monday night on December 1... BRRRR), he asked me for permission to pursue me. I said, "Yes, I would like that very much." :) He then asked my dad to coffee to "declare his intentions" and answer any of my dad's questions.
I couldn't believe what was happening! All this time, and not only was I actually dating someone, but it was the someone I had first noticed TWO years earlier! I was still very cautious, but I had one of those "gut"/God feelings this would be IT.
After a trip to Rock Hill to meet his parents in February, I pretty much knew. It was important to me to meet his family and see how he treated them. When we came back, I was ready to consider the "l" word, which I had told him I wouldn't say until I was ready to give my whole heart and KNEW that was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I always thought I would take awhile in a courtship to get to that point, but I told him in March, after we'd dated just over 4 months. He knew it much earlier and let me know, but patiently waited for my heart to catch up. :) He told me he didn't want to leave UT without me. :) And while he left for 3 months right before the wedding, he was preparing for me to join him here in Florida. :)
We started more seriously talking about marriage in the summer and first started looking at rings. In August (2004), I started my year-long teaching internship and he started his second year of grad school. On October 2, he proposed. :) I was grumpy and tired ALL day! He took me out to dinner at Olive Garden. Afterwards, we had dessert at his house. He asked me if I would rinse the dishes because he bought me something he wanted me to wear the next day. It was upstairs and he wanted to go get it. I suspected it was a ring, but he bought me a dress for my graduation, so I wasn't sure. I saw his reflection in the kitchen window and that he put a small box behind his back. I was done with the dishes, but I rewashed the last one to gather my thoughts. I slowly walked into the dining room. He set the box on the table and said he thought we could open it. I, brilliantly, replied, "Nuh uh!!!" Matt is rarely a man of few words, so I expect a big, long speech. Instead, all he could get out on bended knee was, "Rebecca Jennette Guilford, will you marry me?" I stood with my mouth gaping open and trying to cover it with my left hand (he needed that one, oops). Then I said yes. He put it on my finger, and I was just in shock! I finally asked him to stand up, because he was still on one knee!!!! We hurried home to show my parents. :) He had asked their permission, of course, back in JULY! He offered to tell them the exact date of the proposal when it got closer, but they said they didn't think they could act normal if they knew and didn't want to give it away.
We set a date for October 15. I felt like the year flew. Matt felt like it couldn't go fast enough. :) I finished my program in May, Matt accepted a job offer the beginning of June, defended his thesis the first week of July and moved to Florida right after! We were apart for 3 months, and that was really hard. But now we're together... for GOOD! :) Praise the Lord!
It is amazing to see how God wove everything together. And so many "one small things" could have changed everything! I almost didn't stay in Knoxville for college (had a deposit in and everything somewhere else), he almost didn't stay at UT for grad school (he got a call offering an internship in Indiana the DAY after he accepted his graduate assistant position at UT), he asked ELISSA (honestly, a SWEET, sweet friend :) ) out, I couldn't remember where I parked my OWN car... it goes on an on. And God has given us so many fun stories, from all the times the ball seemed to be rolling but stopped, to me suggesting--the week before he first asked me out-- (I thought sneakily) that he come as the Big Bad Wolf to a church costume party since he needed an idea and I was going at Little Red Riding Hood. He picked up on that "subtle hint" as well. :) And every day God reveals more in which He has fashioned us perfectly for each other. What a gift!
If you have made it this far, you are a TROOPER!! I guess I can't help but gush at this great and marvelous gift of Matt. :) To God be the glory!! Thanks for reading. :)
Love,
Becca

A Bit of our Beginning
I'm sorry I still haven't had time to write up "our story." First I was catching up from grading, now I'm preparing for a sub for the first time (I'll have one Monday when I have to go to a new teacher inservice). It's a lot of work!
So, to hold you over, here's a scan of a sign from our reception. Each table was named after a place/activity that is important to our relationship. I took out the name of the street, because I posted it elsewhere on the internet as an example and didn't want the street to be tracked to Knoxville. So, the whited out part should say "Cumberland Avenue." I hope you enjoy this tidbit, and please know there is more to come! :)

(you'll probably need to click on the picture to blow it up, then you'll be able to read the print more easily)

October 15....January 15
(Matt's caption: "We don't look tired or anything.")
P.S. Congratulations to Kim on passing the real estate exam!!!
