So, yesterday we spent a delightful time at St. Augustine. Matt had been rather under the weather during the week. His daily schedule included staying in bed until the last possible minute, pushing himself throug the work day, falling asleep on the bed until dinner was ready, eating, and then dozing back off, all the while running a low grade fever and all the symtoms that accompany that--aches, chills, etc. As such, he was planning a way for some "us" time to make up for the week (not that I blame him by any means for being sick!).
We actually had a relaxing, lazy morning with yummy pancakes and sausage. Matt packed us a picnic, loaded the car, and off we went! I asked Matt if St. Augustine was on the coast, and he thought it was inland. I looked on the map he printed, and there it was on the coast! BEAAAAAACH!!!! :) We drove a little bit around the town, but followed the signs to the beach first and foremost. We had a relaxing time strolling through the sand. The only "snag" was the chilly, windy weather! We surprised ourselves by thinking, "Why is it so cold??" Remember, the highs have been around 78 in Gainesville. We suddenly remembered that it's MARCH! Of course it's cold! It was really pretty though, and we picked up a couple sea shells to bring home. There weren't many on the Gulf during our honeymoon, so it was fun to get a few. :)
After eating our picnic lunch at the beach, we loaded back up to explore St. Augustine. Unfortunately, there must have been some type of accident on the bridge that connects the beaches to the city, because it was shut down by emergency vehicles after we waited in traffic for 10-15 minutes. We turned around, used one of my many trusty Florida maps, and found an alternate way home. That meant we didn't get to explore the city itself. It has a wall from the original fort and some really cool art districts with cobble stone streets and everything. I was excited to look through the artisan shops and take pictures in the historic district. But, since we didn't get to go, we now have another day trip to look forward to. It was just amazing to be at the beach in less than 2 hours! WOW! Who'd have thought I'd ever live that close to the beach?!?? :)
Please come visit us, and we will be more than happy to show you around our newest discovery--St. Augustine!
Here are a few more pictures for your viewing enjoyment. :)

Becca,
My neice goes to Flagler in St. Augustine. I have not gone there yet but I have heard it is one of the prettiest towns in the US. That says a lot! We must meet up there at some point! It is 3 hours from here. Saturday was 80 here but very windy as we were on the beach as well. The boys have discovered "boogie boarding" while Dale, Isabelle and I look for sea glass.
Connor is in FCATS this week. Apparently the time off from the Hurricane gave them an extra week. Also, Maclain's class and the second graders made "Good luck on the FCAT" notes and "Just do your best" notes with Smarties attatched and they parade through the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms cheering them on. They certainly work at indoctrinating them early!
So glad you had a sweet weekend.
