I Did It!!

This week Matt is in Oregon for some work training learning about cast metal processes. Since I had the week alone, Mom came down to spend some time with me! It has been so much fun to hang out, catch up some more, and we've done some house projects, too. She finished painting the trim in the kitchen white (which I had started, a little, before we got Sammy--a year ago), finished cleaning the grout of the kitchen floor so I can seal it and it will all be WHITE! :) She's also putting a second coat of white paint on our china hutch in the dining room. Everything looks WONDERFUL! :)

In addition to all that, she helped me think through the steps Joy gave me for making a baby gift. There's a baby boom at church right now, and I had been making fleece no-sew blankets like this for baby showers.

Seeing as the average temperature hovers in the 90s these days, I thought a fleece blanket might be a little toasty for the next baby shower (a week from Saturday). Joy has a great home-made (by friends) nursing cover, and while we were in Knoxville Ariana made one also. I wrote to Joy who sweetly emailed me great instructions. The next step was to choose fabric. As soon as Mom and I walked into JoAnn's, I saw it (which is unusual at our JoAnn's). It is the sweetest jungle print, and this couple is doing jungle theme for their new baby boy! Perfect!

I found a coordinating yellow for the back and ribbon the just-right shade of yellow too. At first, we couldn't find any boning. We asked for help and were told they didn't have boning (I was thinking, "Here we go again.... life in Gainesville."). But, they DID have it after all! So, with all our materials (and the fabric, boning, and ribbon came to $6.47!!) we headed home.

Today we cut the fabric to the dimensions Joy gave me and pinned it. We had a little trouble getting the sewing machine started, but that was just because it's new to me (thank you again, KIM!!), not because it was doing anything wrong. :) Once we got going, it was pretty smooth sewing! :) I am very excited to present to you my first nursing cover (for baby Ian)...

I hope Christina likes it! They're great because the boning makes the top center section "pop" up, that way mom can see baby and make sure everything is going okay with the feeding. :) But she can remain modestly covered the entire time. The ribbons tie around mom's neck to keep everything discretely in place.

Thanks to my sils whose creativity gave me the courage to try this one out, too! :)

p.s. I miss my hubby! :)

Way to go Becca! The cover looks super!!! You did a great job especially with my instructions that I felt were gibberish (from lack of sleep of course). I know that the recipient will be quite pleased with your handy work!

Wow Becca! You make me miss sewing and creating!! Have fun with it while you have a relaxing summer. What a neat gift. Wish these were around when I had babies. The BEST gifts were the ones that could be used and loved and enjoyed over and over again.
Great work.
