Decisions, Decisions

Here's a picture of the two drapes we bought panels of. The "wooden" paneling is coming DOWN (thanks to Matt's dad), though Matt said this weekend I can go ahead and paint over it in the meantime (yesssss!). :) It will be the same color as the bit of kitchen wall you see on the right ("Spanish Chestnut"). So, we want to keep the room bright, but not go with just neutrals. I want some kind of pattern or texture to the curtains. There's one other blue-greenish with beige accents panel I want to hang up there before we make our final decision. Any thoughts?

And below, Sammy totally got me. :)

"KISSES FOR BECCA!!!" Sammy's thoughts about that picture! :) And I'm way diggen' on the red, but I think it's because I like them against the wood. In the picture the other one looks almost silvery and I like that against the white/cream/you know what color the wall it. It seems very shimmery and romantic and soft. Floaty cload! I'd like to see the blue one too...I way love blue! :) Anyway, both are great and I'm sure the blue will be too!

I like the red curtains. That's what Joy and I have in our room with similar colored walls to your kitchen. You should check it out when you come visit!

i'll admit, i like the other "sand" color. sorry to disagree with the other posts! i like it because it's such a contract to the wood floor. the red curtains look too similar to the floor color. i think the lighter color would bring a nice, crisp, clean look to the room... especially if you are painting the walls a creamy neutral color. BUT if you are not wanting to go with the neutral only look, how about the cream curtains with some bright sash wrapped around it to hold it together?? have i been married to an architect way too long or what!? :)

OR you could buy a really shear curtain and do some bright accent sash??

Becca,
At first I was loving the red...but then again i love decorating with red...to me its very "homey"...but then i read what Jessica said and i would agree...the creamy curtain with a colored sash would look great!! have fun!! i am a bit envious of you and matt being able to decorate and design your home!! living in someone else's house and having to keep it as is but trying to add my own things so that i feel like i live there can be difficult!! are you coming to town THIS weekend? i am sure you are going to be EXTREMELY busy (as whenever we go home to visit family) but if you have time give me a call...maybe this time we can catch up!!! love you!! See, blue is my favorite color... most of my clothes were blue for the LONGest time. I even got to paint my bedroom walls blue at my parents' house in college! When we were registering before our wedding, etc. I wanted to try something "new." So, I went for lots of burgundy accents. Most of our house has golden tones with burgundy and black, and some olive, accents. Our master bathroom and bedroom are that color scheme. The living room has burgundy accents. The guest bedroom right now is more blue/red/green/yellow, and the guest bath is blue/aqua/white/periwinkle. The kitchen does NOT have as much burgundy as I thought. Since the kitchen and den kind of flow into each other, I don't want the color schemes in the rooms to clash. That's why I originally dissed the blue-green drapes I want to try now. I like the neutral panel's play with the floor, like Jess said. But I love the warmth of the burgundy drapes and their contrast to the wall.

I've thought about sheers and/or tie backs, and my only thing is the "window" is really a sliding door (in our dream world, it will eventually, a long time down the road, be French doors) that opens onto our lanai. And unfortunately, that particular side of the lanai is where we store the grill when it's not being used. So, something sheer will allow you a marvelous view of.... the bbq. Not the look I'm going for, but I know you didn't have that info.

I think I will switch the panels' position on the rod and put the neutral next to the kitchen wall and the burgundy on the left, that way I can see what the neutral would look like with the painted wall behind it. I also plan to get a panel of the blue-green today and I'll update with a picture of that too!

Thank you everyone for your opinions! We DO love decorating the house, Bekah. I'm so thankful it's actually not all "complete," because I get to keep changing and updating things here and there. :) It DOES stink, however, to be so far from everyone and not get their advice and input. I love that so many of you are helping us decide!! :)

Love,
Becca

p.s. Yes, I am coming to town THIS weekend. And I am definitely calling you! I was just waiting to see if a particular day was best for Susan. :)

Ok, you asked...The neutral curtains are not my fav just because with the kitchen paint (eventually being on the wood panel) I feel like everything would be pretty neutral. I do love the red but I hear you on the red theme running throughout the house. Maybe I do not see well in the picture but both of the curtains seem to be a "fancier" fabric. If this is the den/family room and it is right off the kitchen you want to make sure that you have curtains that you can wash just in case you burn something (speaking from experience here and totally not speaking about your cooking abilities...I only hear raves from Matt)you can still wash the curtains to help the smell die quicker. Also if this is your family room you might want something a little bit more casual and comfy. Just random thoughts flowing from my head here. Maybe you could find a plaid that had blue and red in it. I think that you might want to keep a little bit of red just to match off the fireplace brick or you could go with a cream to match and pull everything together as well. Also do not count out looking at just plain fabric because it is SUPER SIMPLE to make curtains with just sewing a few straight stitches. Joann's has had all their fabrics 50% off lately so you might want to check that out while you are in town as well. I will keep my eyes open. Sorry for such a lengthy comment. You may bar me from commenting on decorating things from now on!!! :) I found a few things that could go so I will try and email them to you as well. See, I told you that you would bar me!!! :) Love ya and cannot wait to see ya!!!

No, no! I LOVE the help, Joy! Don't get me wrong, Matt is awesome to come with me while I stare at aisles of curtains. But as I've mentioned previously, Gainesville is not exactly a shopping mecca. It is limited. So, I've about exhausted my options here.

It IS the den, and I totally hear you on washable curtains (it's nearly impossible not to burn popcorn in our microwave....) near the kitchen. I just, I guess I've always liked the fancier drapes, so it's been fun to consider them. Even though it's the den, it will have crisp, clean lines. The living room is the room we do most of our "living" in, not the den, because the living room is SO big. Now, when we add a couch to the den, that MIGHT change, but I doubt it, b/c we'll still have all the tv stuff in the living room, as far as favorite Tivo'd shows and Xbox games.

When you say plain fabric, Joy, do you mean a solid color, or do you mean go look at bolts of fabric that are not pre-fab curtains? I love some stuff in the JoAnn's home section... and Walmart DID give me cash back for the ones I had asked for for Christmas and then decided against and returned (a plain, less formal burgundy). So, that's a possibility.... Hmmm. I'm excited to see what you're emailing!

Love,
me

Is there any kind of natural light going on in this room? That could make a difference....

Woah...there's a party going on in here! I just HAD to join the crowd, even though I have no decorating wisdom to share! I think no matter what you decide on, your home will be lovely because it's where you live with your honey (x2 counting Sammy!).

Happy V-day!
Kitsy

Hey Becca, yes, I did just mean to check out the bolts of fabric at Joann's especially if the sale is still on or you have a coupon!!! Just a thought to give you more choices! :)
